Is Backgroundless really free?
Yes! Background removal, bulk processing, Magic Brush refinement, background changing, and text overlay are all free with no hidden fees, no watermarks, and no per-image limits. We can offer this because all processing happens in your browser, which means we don't pay for expensive cloud servers. There is also an optional Backgroundless Pro upgrade - a one-time purchase (never a subscription) that adds seller workflow tools on top of the free editor.
What is Backgroundless Pro?
Backgroundless Pro is a one-time $49.00 purchase. It adds Catalog Studio for local, resumable seller jobs up to 500 images; resize-and-preview export; batch ZIP conversion and SKU naming; batch styles; Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, and eBay recipes; product shadows and scenes; perspective tilt; 100 premium backgrounds; and a reusable brand kit. Future Pro updates are included.
What is Catalog Studio?
Catalog Studio is a local workflow for sellers with hundreds of supplier or product photos. It maps multi-image SKUs, runs separate advisory checks for Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, and eBay, applies role-aware fixes, saves after every image, requires manual content QA, and exports approved marketplace folders plus mapping and exclusion CSVs. The free audit accepts 10 images and repairs one; Pro supports local jobs up to 500 images in current desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
How do Pro license keys work?
Checkout is handled securely by Lemon Squeezy. After purchase, your license key arrives by email - paste it into the editor once and Pro unlocks on that device, no account or signup needed. You can activate the key on a few devices and unlink a device at any time to free up the slot. Pro features run entirely in your browser just like the free tool; the only network request is validating your license key.
How does AI background removal work?
Backgroundless uses a state-of-the-art AI segmentation model that runs directly in your browser. The model analyzes your image to identify the main subject (person, product, animal, etc.) and separates it from the background with pixel-level precision. If your browser supports WebGPU, processing is accelerated by your GPU for even faster results.
Are my images private and secure?
Absolutely. Unlike most background removal tools that upload your images to remote servers, Backgroundless processes everything 100% client-side in your browser. Your images never leave your device - they are not uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone. This makes it especially safe for sensitive content like passport photos, unreleased product images, or personal photos.
What image formats are supported?
JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP are the most reliable inputs across supported browsers. Other image formats depend on whether your browser can decode them, so convert unusual camera formats first if an upload fails. Free bulk runs are capped at 40 files and 400 MB total to protect browser memory.
How do I remove background from multiple images at once?
Use the free bulk processor to upload up to 40 images in one run. Supported browsers use the local GPU or a CPU worker pool, and you can download the finished transparent PNGs individually. Pro adds one-click ZIP packaging and catalog workflows up to 500 images.
Can I change the background color after removing it?
Yes! After removing the background, switch to the "Change Background" tab to choose from solid colors, gradients, patterns, or upload your own background image. This is perfect for creating product photos with white backgrounds for Amazon, or adding creative gradients for social media posts.
How do I make a transparent background PNG?
Upload your image, click "Remove Background," and download the result. The downloaded file is automatically saved as a PNG with a transparent background. Make sure not to convert it to JPG afterward, as JPG does not support transparency.
Does Backgroundless work on mobile devices?
Yes! Backgroundless is fully responsive and works on smartphones and tablets. The interface adapts to smaller screens with touch-friendly controls. Processing may be slightly slower on mobile devices compared to desktop computers with dedicated GPUs, but the results are identical.
What is the Magic Brush refinement tool?
Magic Brush is our advanced AI-powered refinement tool that lets you fine-tune background removal results with simple clicks. If the AI missed a spot or removed something you wanted to keep, click on that area to fix it. Magic Brush uses a fast AI segmentation model to understand exactly what you're clicking on and make precise adjustments.
How do I add text behind a person in a photo?
Use the "Insert Text" tab after removing the background. Set the text position to "Behind Subject" and your text will appear between the background and the person - creating a popular magazine-style effect. Customize fonts, colors, size, rotation, and even 3D tilt effects for professional results.
Can I use Backgroundless for passport photos?
Yes! Backgroundless is ideal for passport photos because of its complete privacy - your identity documents never leave your device. Remove the existing background, then use "Change Background" to set the exact color required by your country (white for US, light gray for UK, etc.). Do I need to create an account?
No! Backgroundless requires no signup, no account creation, and no email address. Simply visit the site and start editing. Your images are processed entirely on your device, so there's no need for user accounts or cloud storage.
What is WebGPU and how does it speed up processing?
WebGPU is a modern browser technology that gives web applications access to your computer's graphics processor (GPU). When available, Backgroundless uses WebGPU to run its AI models 2-4x faster than CPU-only processing. Chrome, Edge, and Safari support WebGPU. If your browser doesn't support it, Backgroundless automatically falls back to CPU processing - so it works everywhere.
Can I use the results for commercial purposes?
Yes! There are no restrictions on how you use images processed with Backgroundless. Use them for e-commerce product listings, marketing materials, social media, print on demand, or any commercial purpose. You retain full rights to your images - we never claim ownership or usage rights over your content.
How does Backgroundless compare to Remove.bg and Canva?
remove.bg is moving background removal into Canva. Per its FAQ, the standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET, unused PAYG credits expire that morning, consumers are pointed to Canva, and self-serve API moves to Leonardo.Ai. Canva remains a design suite with background removal as a Pro feature — verify current plan terms.
