1. Introduction

Backgroundless ("we", "us", or "our") operates the website backgroundless.io (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use our Service. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

2. Client-Side Image Processing

Your images are never uploaded to our servers. All image processing - including background removal, background changes, and text overlay - happens entirely within your web browser using client-side AI models (state-of-the-art open-source AI models). Your images remain on your device at all times. We have no access to, and do not store, any images you process using our Service.

3. Local Catalog Storage

Catalog Studio stores job manifests in IndexedDB and image files in your browser's private origin storage so a job can resume after a reload. This data remains on your device and can be deleted from Catalog Studio or by clearing site data. It is not synchronized to our servers.

4. Optional Product Emails

If you join the Catalog Studio waitlist, your email address, IP address, page referrer, and available campaign parameters are sent to Buttondown, our email provider. Buttondown uses the IP address for spam validation and sends a confirmation email before the subscription becomes active. Joining is optional, does not affect access to the editor, and you can unsubscribe from any email.

5. Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics (measurement ID: G-PR9S63SGDQ) to understand how visitors use our website. Google Analytics collects anonymized information such as:

Pages visited and time spent on each page
Referring website or source
Browser type and device information
Approximate geographic location (country/city level)
Interaction events (clicks, scrolls)

This data is aggregated and does not personally identify you. Analytics cookies are only set if you accept them in our cookie banner. If you decline, or simply ignore the banner, Google Analytics stays in a cookieless, consent-restricted mode for as long as that choice stands. In that mode anonymous measurement pings are still sent to Google, but they carry no cookies and no identifiers that would let your visits be linked together or across sessions. Advertising signals stay switched off whichever option you choose - we run no ads. Session recording (Microsoft Clarity) runs only if you accept. You can also opt out entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

If you accept analytics cookies, we also use Microsoft Clarity to understand how the editor is used through heatmaps and anonymized session replays (keyboard input is masked). See the Microsoft Privacy Statement for how Microsoft handles this data.

6. Advertising

We do not display third-party advertising. Backgroundless is funded by the optional one-time Pro purchase, so no ad networks run on this site and no advertising cookies are set by us.

To change your consent choice, clear this site's data in your browser settings - the cookie banner will appear again on your next visit.

8. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

Google Analytics - Website analytics and usage tracking
Microsoft Clarity - Heatmaps and anonymized session replays to improve the editor (loads only after you accept analytics cookies)
Vercel - Website hosting and performance analytics
Lemon Squeezy - Merchant of record for the optional one-time Pro purchase. Checkout happens on Lemon Squeezy's site; we never see your payment details. To unlock Pro, your license key and a device identifier are validated against Lemon Squeezy and stored in your browser's localStorage.
Buttondown - Double opt-in email delivery for people who voluntarily join the Catalog Studio waitlist.
Google Fonts - Font delivery
jsDelivr CDN - Content delivery for AI model files

Each of these services has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data.

9. Children's Privacy

Our Service is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.

Since we process images entirely in your browser and do not store personal data, most data protection rights are inherently satisfied. However, you can:

Opt out of personalized ads through Google Ads Settings
Clear your browser cookies and local storage at any time
Unsubscribe from product emails using the link in any Buttondown email
