United States

The US State Department requires an original, unchanged photo. Its guidance rejects changes made with software, phone apps or AI, including an example with a digitally replaced background. United Kingdom

UK digital passport photos must be unaltered by software and taken against a plain, light-coloured background. When using your own device, the guidance says to include your head, shoulders and upper body and let the application handle cropping. Read the UK digital photo rules.

Canada

Canada requires a commercial photographer or photo studio and does not accept altered photos. Its examples of alterations include replacing a background, removing shadows and cutting a person onto a white background. Paper photos must be professionally printed; home printing is not accepted.
